The 'Protect (the)ir Heart' project is meant to raise awareness about the critical need to continue abstinence-centered education in America. It’s a campaign about a serious health issue facing our youth. It’s an opportunity for youth to let their voices be heard from their home towns all the way to Washington DC. It will say that they want to start a new generation with better relationships, stronger marriages, fewer divorces, fewer teen pregnancies, and healthier emotions. They want the tools that will empower them to reach their goals and achieve their dreams. Government funding for abstinence-centered education was first signed into legislation by President Bill Clinton. It continued through President George Bush’s administration but has been eliminated by President Barack Obama. Research has shown that providing abstinence education to teenagers increases their likelihood for a healthy, future marriage, as well as decreasing the chance of living in poverty. Through abstinence education, teens learn that abstinence until marriage is the only 100% effective way of preventing sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy. We are asking that funding for abstinence-centered education be continued through a separate funding stream than what has been designated for comprehensive sex education. The message of risk avoidance (abstinence) needs to be separated from the risk reduction message (birth control and condoms). This past year, abstinence-centered education received great bi-partisan support in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Current funding for abstinence-centered education is $150 million, and supported by parents by a 2:1 margin. But without that funding, our schools will be denied the opportunity to continue to lower expulsion rates by 40%, high school dropout rates by 50%, and increase college graduation by 66%. We ask that you download this card, write a personal message, and mail it to your congressional representative and senators. Take action; let your voice be heard!!
